Department of Statistics Launches Young Scientist Project of National Key R&D Program

Recently, the Department of Statistics and Data Science at Tsinghua University hosted the kick-off and implementation plan demonstration meeting for the project 8.1 Mathematical Foundations of Statistics and Artificial Intelligence, a Young Scientists Project under the "Mathematics and Applied Research" key special program of the National Key R&D Program. The meeting deliberated on the implementation plan, task division and specific research content of the project. Associate Professor Yang Pengkun serves as the project principal.

The meeting was co-chaired by Professor Wang Zhaojun from Nankai University and Associate Professor Deng Ke, Associate Dean for Research of the Department of Statistics and Data Science. More than a dozen experts, including Professor Xu Wenwei from Fudan University, Professor Yang Lijian, Professor Yang Yuhong and Assistant Professor Li Jian from Tsinghua University, Professor Zhang Zhihua from Peking University, and Professor Zhu Liping from Renmin University of China, participated in the demonstration and provided guidance for the project implementation. Mr. Cao Lipeng from the Project Office of the Research Institute of Tsinghua University, Academician Chen Songxi, Dean of the Department of Statistics and Data Science, and Professor Liu Jun, Chairman of the Preparatory Committee, attended the kick-off meeting.

At the start of the meeting, Associate Professor Deng Ke first introduced the launch of the project and, on behalf of the Department of Statistics, expressed gratitude to the experts from Nankai University, Fudan University, Peking University, Renmin University of China and other universities for their support.

Mr. Cao Lipeng from the Project Office of the Research Institute delivered a speech on behalf of the university. He noted that the competition for the Young Scientists Project is extremely fierce, and as the supporting unit of the project, Tsinghua University will fully guarantee the project support, ensure that links such as fund management and achievement labeling comply with national requirements, and wished the project a smooth completion as scheduled.

Academician Chen Songxi and Professor Liu Jun delivered speeches on behalf of the school and the department respectively. Both expressed their gratitude to all experts for their assistance and support for the new project, and commended the efforts and capabilities of Yang Pengkun's team. They looked forward to the team achieving internationally leading results in the next five years, and also expressed their vision and expectation for the academic status of statistics and data science at Tsinghua University in the framework of artificial intelligence and big data.

In the project team reporting session, Associate Professor Yang Pengkun, the project principal, elaborated on the project's research background and goal setting, task decomposition and research content, key milestones and implementation plan, project organization and management mechanism, as well as achievement forms and testing methods. As core members of the project, Professor Zhou Ling from Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, Assistant Professor Zhang Qiong from Renmin University of China, and Assistant Professor Zhang Jingzhao from the Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences of Tsinghua University respectively introduced the specific content of the three tasks.
