Minor in Statistics

Program Objectives

Characterized by an equal emphasis on statistical theory and practical application, this program aims to cultivate interdisciplinary talent with a solid foundation in statistical theory, strong analytical skills, and an understanding of current developments at the frontiers of statistical research. Students will develop the ability to apply statistical principles effectively to real-world problems arising in production and everyday life. The program also prepares undergraduates from other disciplines for graduate study in statistics-related fields and for careers involving statistical work in industry, public health, government agencies, and research institutions.

 

Admissions & Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following conditions:

  • Enrolment: Must be a full-time undergraduate student currently enrolled at Tsinghua University.

  • Academic Standing: Demonstrate excellent academic performance in their major; no failing grades in any previously completed courses.

  • Prerequisites: Successful completion of Calculus and Linear Algebra (or equivalent) with high marks .

  • Exclusivity: Applicants must not be concurrently enrolled in any other minor or second degree programs.

 

Duration of Study and Certification

Duration of study: The minor must be completed before graduation from the student’s primary undergraduate program and is administered under a credit-based system.

  • Students graduating in 2026 must complete 28 credits. Those who meet all academic requirements and obtain their primary bachelor's degree will be awarded a Certificate of Minor in Statistics from Tsinghua University.

  • Students graduating in 2027 or later must complete 30 credits, including a 3-credit capstone thesis/project component. Upon satisfactory completion and receipt of the primary bachelor's degree, students will be awarded a Minor Degree Certificate in Statistics from Tsinghua University.

 

Curriculum Structure and Credit Distribution

The Minor in Statistics curriculum consists of required courses and elective courses, all of which must be completed during the period of the student’s primary undergraduate study.

Students who fulfill graduation requirements for their major but have not completed the minor are not permitted to extend their period of undergraduate enrollment. However, they may apply to continue taking remaining minor courses after graduation. If all requirements are completed within two years beyond the standard duration of the major program, the minor certificate may still be awarded. Otherwise, completed minor courses will be recorded on the transcript as general elective credits.
