Campus Open Day | Let's Talk About Statistics at Tsinghua

Release Time:2026-06-17 20:25:10

On June 14th,

Tsinghua University held its 2026 Campus Open Day.

The Campus Open Day welcomed high school seniors and their parents from all over the country, offering them an opportunity to explore the university's academic disciplines, educational framework, and prospective career directions.

The Department of Statistics and Data Science established an information booth at the event, where a number of faculty members were present to offer face-to-face consultation to visiting students and their families.

"Is statistics math? What's the difference?"

"How are statistics and AI related?"

"In the age of AI, is statistics better off or worse off?"

"Which industries offer opportunities for statistics graduates? What career directions can they pursue?"

......

These were the most common questions—and great starting points for understanding statistics.

Statistics is the science of data—a core discipline for identifying regularities in data and enabling evidence-based decision-making.

As AI and data science continue to advance at a rapid pace, the field of statistics extends beyond data analysis to encompass the underlying mechanisms of models, their generalization performance, interpretability, and the quantification of uncertainty.

Addressing the questions that visitors cared most about, our faculty provided an overview grounded in the realities of Tsinghua's undergraduate statistics program, covering topics such as the disciplinary positioning, curriculum system, training model, faculty strength, college partnerships, and future development prospects.

The Department of Statistics and Data Science at Tsinghua University adheres to the guiding principle of "Mathematics as the Foundation, Statistics as the Core, and Data as the Application." It integrates  mathematical foundations, statistical thinking, computational skills, and the ability to analyze real-world problems, to nurture statisticians and data scientists who combine deep theoretical understanding with the capacity for cross-disciplinary innovation.

During the consultation, some students expressed concerns about the intensity of the curriculum, while parents inquired about career outcomes and long-term development trajectories. At the same time, many students showed strong interest in fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, medical statistics, and financial modeling.

With patience and care, our faculty addressed every question, every curiosity, and every expectation that came their way.

One Open Day may not provide all the answers, but it can be a start—a start to discovering a field, to envisioning a future path, to forging a personal connection with statistics at Tsinghua.

Wherever there is data, there is statistics and data science.

We look forward to see you at Tsinghua.

To learn more about statistics, we invite you to join Professor Jun Liu, Department Head of Statistics and Data Science, for an in-depth exploration of the statistics major on the evening of June 20 at 19:15.
