On November 29, 2025, the "The 2025 Tsinghua University Symposium on the Development of Statistics and Data Science Disciplines" was grandly held at Tsinghua University. The conference brought together many leading scholars in the fields of statistics and data science from across China. Academician Zhiming Ma, Researcher at the Institute of Applied Mathematics, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Academician Chien-Fu Wu, Member of the National Academy of Engineering and X.Q. Deng Chair Professor at the School of Data Science, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen; and Academician Zongben Xu, Professor at Xi'an Jiaotong University and Director of Pazhou Laboratory, Huangpu, delivered keynote addresses. Academician Jun Liu, Member of the National Academy of Sciences, Xinghua Distinguished Chair Professor at Tsinghua University, Head of the Department of Statistics and Data Science at Tsinghua University, and Academician Songxi Chen, Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xinghua Chair Professor at Tsinghua University, Dean of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Data Sciences, attended the conference and delivered speeches. The symposium was chaired by Associate Professor Ke Deng, Deputy Head of the Department of Statistics and Data Science at Tsinghua University.

In his opening address, Jun Liu introduced the current development status and future plans of the Department of Statistics and Data Science, emphasizing the significance of disciplinary development in advancing cutting-edge research and interdisciplinary integration.
Songxi Chen, from the perspective of the interdisciplinary nature of data science, shared his vision for the deep integration of artificial intelligence and statistical methods across multiple fields.

During the keynote session of the conference, Zhiming Ma delivered a presentation titled "5G Polar Codes and Solving Partial Differential Equations with AI Methods," sharing the latest advances at the intersection of information theory and artificial intelligence.

Chien-Fu Wu delivered a presentation titled "The Evaluation System of Statistical Journals: From the Big Four to the Magnificent Ten," offering an in-depth analysis of disciplinary evaluation and pathways for building international academic platforms.

Zongben Xu delivered a presentation titled "Mathematical Foundations of AI Research: Development Trends and Core Issues," emphasizing the fundamental supporting role of mathematical theory in the development of artificial intelligence.
In addition to the keynote sessions, the conference also featured a session for young faculty to present their research work. More than ten young faculty members, including Ke Deng, Dong Li, Lin Hou, Sheng Yu, showcased their respective research directions and latest achievements, engaging in in-depth discussions with attending experts during the exchange session.
The symposium facilitated extensive discussions on key topics such as disciplinary frontiers in statistics and data science, talent cultivation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Attending experts unanimously agreed that statistics and data science, as fundamental disciplines supporting national scientific and technological innovation and social governance, should further strengthen the integration of theoretical innovation with practical applications, promote the development of high-level collaboration platforms, and serve national strategies and industrial needs.
This academic event not only injected new momentum into the development of statistics and data science at Tsinghua University but also provided a high-end platform for in-depth exchange and collaboration among scholars in the field domestically. Looking ahead, the Department of Statistics and Data Science at Tsinghua University will continue to expand domestic and international cooperation networks, advancing the discipline toward high-quality and international development.
