Faculty Participate in JSM and Receive Two Prestigious Awards

The American Statistical Association Joint Statistical Meeting was held from 29 July to 03 August at Baltimore. Faculty of the center received two prestigious awards and held a series of activities.

Prof. Jun Liu received the 2017 “Jerome Sacks Award for Cross-Disciplinary Research”.contributions at the interface of statistics and biology, including algorithms for protein sequence analysis, DNA sequence motif finding, gene expression analysis, and regulatory network elucidation that have become important tools for computational biologists." The Sacks Award is an annual research prize given by the US National Institute of Statistical Sciences for “sustained, high-quality cross-disciplinary research involving the statistical sciences.

Prof. Xihong Lin won the F.N. David Award from the COPSS. This award is named after Florence Nightingale David, an accomplished statistician and the first recipient of the Elizabeth L. Scott Award. The award, sponsored jointly by COPSS and the Caucus for Women in Statistics, is granted to a female statistician who serves as a role model to other women by her contributions to the profession through excellence in research, leadership of multidisciplinary collaborative groups, statistics education, or service to the professional societies.

Citation for Xihong:“For leadership and collaborative research in statistical genetics and bioinformatics; and for passion and dedication in mentoring students and young statisticians.”

During the JSM, the center held a reception attracting more than 70 attendees. Prof. Jun Liu and Prof. Xihong Lin introduced the development of Statistics in Tsinghua University and encouraged overseas talents to join Tsinghua University.
